Description:
Benzyl alcohol is produced naturally by many plants and iscommonly found in fruits and teas. It is also found in a varietyof essential oils including jasmine, hyacinth, and ylang-ylang.Itis also one of the chemical compounds found in castoreum. Thiscompound is gathered from the beaver plant food.
Benzyl alcohol has nearly the same refraction index of quartz andwool fibre. If a clear quartz object is immersed in benzylalcohol, it becomes almost invisible. This has been used as amethod to non-destructively recognize if an object is made oftrue quartz or not (see crystal skull). Similarly, white woolimmersed in benzyl alcohol also becomes almost invisible clearlyrevealing contaminants such as dark and medullated fibres andvegetable matter.
Benzyl alcohol is a colorless liquid that has a mild, pleasantaromatic scent. It’s also called an “aromatic alcohol,” and isused as a preservative, as a fragrance ingredient, as the activeingredient in head lice treatment, and as a solvent, which simplymeans that it’s used to dissolve other ingredients to make asmooth formula or solution.
Function:
Benzyl Alcohol,Antibacterial Agent
Benzyl alcohol is used as a bacteriostatic preservative at lowconcentration in intravenous medications, cosmetics and topicaldrugs.
Benzyl Alcohol is the antiseptic which keeps the steroid solutionsterile.
Benzyl Alcohol (BA):A fairly potent solvent, whose main functionfor our purposes is keeping a solution bacteriostatic. It’spresence as low as 0.9% is enough to prevent practically allmicrobial growth in solution.
Benzyl Alcohol is often the primary solvent and sometime the onlysolvent in a steroid given formula. Its primary function is as asterilizing agent. However, due to its solvency power BenzylAlcohol is often used to keep hormones in solution with oil orother vehicles. Benzyl Alcohol is also one of the thinnest (thatis best for viscosity reduction).
Its use in Steroids is to preserve the suspension for months, even years, without any reduction in sterility. Alcohol is anantibacterial disinfectant and is used as such in manyindustries. As aforementioned Benzyl Alcohol ensures the Steroidmaintains its sterility when used in the rightconcentration.
Benzyl Alcohol (BA) is used to increase the lipid solubility ofesterfied compounds and to prevent bacteria growth in theoil.
The shorter the ester, the more Benzyl Alcohol is needed to getthe compound to dissolve.More Benzyl Alcohol is required todissolve the raw powder to make high concentrationproducts
Application:
(1) Benzyl alcohol is a good middle boiling pointsolvent.
(2) The main applications:paint solvent; ink solvent; plexiglasssolvent; photographic developing agent; PVC stabilizer; medicine, synthetic resin solvent; ointment or liquid medicine; solvent formeat products stamp-pad ink and ball-point penoil.
(3) It is used for carpet degreaser; crater cleaning agent;silicone solvent stabilizer; benzyl ester or etherintermediate.
(4) Benzyl alcohol is a kind of very useful perfume fixative. Itis an indispensable spice when jasmine, tuberose or ylang ismixed, and used to compound soap and dailycosmetics.
Benzyl alcohol is used as a general solvent for inks, paints, lacquers, and epoxy resin coatings. It is also a precursor to avariety of esters, used in the soap, perfume, and flavorindustries. It is also used as a photographicdeveloper.
Side Effect
However, if too much is used the Steroid will be painful toinject and will cause post injection soreness. The major drawbackto this solvent is that it tends to make for painful injectionsif the concentration goes above 10%. (This is true for any lowmolecular weight alcohol). Less than this tends to be painlessfor most people.
Unfortunately, Benzyl Alcohol can also cause the destruction ofcells and significant localised pain and inflammation. Thediscomfort is characterised by fairly rapid onset of a painful, red, swollen area.
