GPS, or Global Positioning System, is a satellite navigation system developed by the United States government and operated worldwide. The common name for these systems is Global Navigation Satellite System or GNSS, with GPS being the most widely used GNSS system. At first GPS was only used for military navigation, but now anyone with a GPS receiver can collect signals from GPS satellites and use the system.
GPS consists of three parts:
satellite. At any given time, there are about 30 GPS satellites orbiting in space, each about 20,000 kilometers above Earth's surface.
control station. Control stations are scattered around the world to monitor and control the satellites, with the main purpose of keeping the system running and verifying the accuracy of the GPS broadcast signals.
GPS receiver. GPS receivers are found in cell phones, computers, cars, boats, and many other devices, and if there are no obstacles such as tall buildings around you and the weather is good, your GPS receiver should detect at least four GPS satellites at a time no matter where you are.
