Cuttlebone, also known as cuttlefish bone, is a hard, brittleinternal structure (an internal shell) found in all membersof the family Sepiidae, commonly known as cuttlefish, withinthe cephalopods. In other cephalopod families it is calleda gladius.

Cuttlebone is composed primarily of aragonite. It is achambered, gas-filled shell used for buoyancy control; itssiphuncle is highly modified and is on the ventral side ofthe shell. The microscopic structure of the cuttleboneconsists of narrow layers connected by numerous uprightpillars.

Depending on the species, cuttlebones implode at a depth of200 to 600 metres (660 to 1,970 ft). Because of thislimitation, most species of cuttlefish live on the seafloorin shallow water, usually on the continental shelf.

The largest cuttlebone belongs to the Australian giantcuttlefish, which lives between the surface and a maximumdepth of 100 metres.

USES OF DRIED CUTTLEFISH BONE:

Most people have heard the saying that calcium buildsstrong bones, but it's important to realize that the sameapplies to birds. Cuttlebone is an important dietarysupplement for birds because it is a great source ofnecessary minerals and calcium, which helps birds with boneformation and blood clotting.

Cuttlebone is an inexpensive source of calcium carbonateand other trace minerals for your bird. It is a naturalproduct and doesn't contain toxins or contaminants. On theother hand, most artificial mineral blocks are made fromPlaster of Paris. It is also important to know that theartificial mineral blocks contain whatever the manufactureradded; this could be food coloring or seed.

Similar to calcium, trace elements are crucial for bothpeople and birds. The trace elements found withincuttlebone benefit birds, as well. Iron aids with red bloodcell formation and function, Potassium maintains normalheart and muscle activity, Zinc helps with the immunesystem, and Copper assists with proper circulation andhealing.

Besides being an important dietary supplement, cuttlebonehas a rough texture, making it an ideal tool to helpsupport beak strength. Birds can use cuttlebones to helpkeep their beaks trimmed and sharp. Even finches andcanaries will often improve their beak health if youprovide them with cuttlebone.
