What is the equivalent of M2 steel?

1.3343 is the equivalent numeric designation for M2 material identified in ISO 4957. M2 is an AOD melted high speed tool steel with increased properties due to molybdenum additions. M2 is a higher carbon version of M1 giving it better wear resistance. M2 is used mostly in cutting tool applications.

M2 is a popular high speed steel, whereas D2 is a cold work steel. M2 & D2 are about the same toughness, but M2 tool steel will hold a better edge as the grain structure is finer, but it is not very corrosion resistant & can rust, whereas D2 is semi-stainless.

M2 high speed tool steel is tungsten-molybdenum high-speed steel with a well-balanced carbon composition and high toughness. It is also called JIS SKH51 and DIN 1.3343 steel. It is easy to overheat, control the quenching heating temperature is necessary and the heat treatment protection requirements are strict. It is used widely to make cutting tools because of its great hardness and wear resistance. It has replaced T1 high speed steel in most applications, become the first choice of customer due to its great performance and extremely high-performance price ratio. The application is decided by M2 steel chemical composition and properties. It has high hardness, red hardness. Good thermoplasticity and excellent toughness. It is used to make tools that require has good wear resistance and toughness which can sustain large impact forces. Such as pinion cutters, planers, milling cutters, turning tools, drill bits and etc.

Hardness (factory state): ≤255HB

Curing Temperature: 1220℃-1240℃

Hardness (after heat treatment): ≤ 63 HRC

It is a good choice for cutting applications due to its high wear resistance and toughness.Carbide evenly distributed and high toughness.Can be used to make milling cutters, reamers, broaches, gear cutters and other industrial tools.
