Paraffin wax is divided into industrial grade and food grade. The food additive paraffin wax is obtained by using oil-containing wax as raw material, sweating or solvent deoiling, and then hydrotreating or clay refining. The molecular formula is CnH2n+2 (18≤n≤32), and the relative molecular weight is 254-450.
The current standard number is China National Food Safety Standard GB 1886.26-2016. Food-grade paraffin is white and translucent, almost odorless, has good stability, low oil content, and has a certain toughness, which meets the requirements of food hygiene.
As paraffin products are by-products of petroleum crude oil, there may be other impurities, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), heavy metals, etc. Therefore, the food industry stipulates that the paraffin used in food must be food-grade paraffin.
Product Application
Paraffin wax has many uses in the food industry. China’s food additive standard GB2760 stipulates that:
Paraffin wax can be used as a food processing aid for potato chips, oil, candy, and grain processing, mainly as a defoamer or release agent.
Paraffin can also be used as a basic substance in chewing gum.
In addition, paraffin can also be used as a coating on the surface of fresh eggs, which has the function of preventing insects and ash. It can also be used as a preservative film coating for vegetables and fruits. It is also known as food glazing.
In food packaging, paraffin can be used as an impregnating wax for containers and packaging materials in contact with food, mainly playing a waterproof role. Such as wine bottle sealing wax and medicine bottle sealing wax.
