Isopropyl palmitate Usage

Widely used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Mainly used as an additive and solubilizer. Isopropyl palmitate has stable properties and is not suitable for oxidation to produce odor. It is an excellent skin emollient in skin care and cosmetics, which makes skin soft, smooth and non-greasy. It has good permeability to the skin and can be used as a good solvent for pigments in mascara. It is commonly used in skin creams, hair oils, eye shadows, lipsticks, mascaras and other formulations.

How to make isopropyl palmitate

There are four ways to make isopropyl palmitate:

(1) Direct esterification of palmitic acid with isopropyl ester: in the presence of a strong solid acid catalyst such as zirconia, palmitic acid and isopropanol are esterified, and the water produced by the esterification reaction is separated under total reflux. And an excess of isopropanol, the product is filtered out of the solid catalyst, distilled under reduced pressure, and the isopropyl palmitate fraction is obtained;

(2) in the presence of a zeolite-supported zinc catalyst, palmitic acid and propylene can be rapidly reacted to form isopropyl palmitate at 2.75 kPa;

(3) a mixture of propylene and palmitic acid is passed through a sulfonic acid type ion exchange resin to also form isopropyl palmitate;

(4) Transesterification method: A fat or oil containing palmitic acid oil and fat is used as a raw material, for example, palmitic acid oil, coconut oil, or the like. First, a methyl ester mixture of a fatty acid such as palmitic acid is produced by transesterification with methanol; that is, a palmitic acid-containing oil is transesterified with methanol in the presence of sodium hydroxide or sodium ethoxide at 50 to 70 ° C to form a palm. A methyl ester mixture of a fatty acid such as an acid is subjected to distillation to separate a methyl ester of another fatty acid to obtain methyl palmitate. The methyl palmitate and the isopropanol were transesterified at 85 to 95 ° C, and methanol and other impurities were distilled off to obtain a product of isopropyl palmitate.

Palmitic acid coexists in nature with a mixture of various palmitic acid oils and other higher fatty acid oils, and there is no free state, so whether it is palm oil or palm oil methyl ester, it is derived from palm oil ester.
