Rice accounts for 80% of the calories eaten in Asia, orone-fifth of the calories eaten worldwide by humans. It isthe agricultural commodity with the third-highest worldwideproduction (rice, 741.5 million tonnes in 2014), aftersugarcane. Alluvial loamy and clayey soil is ideal forgrowing rice. The rice crop needs about 24°C or above withminor variations during sowing, growing and harvestingseasons. It grows well in the areas where rainfall is above100cm. Deltas, river valleys, coastal plains and terracedfields in mountainous regions are ideal for itscultivation.
Asian rice (Oryza sativa) is most widely known and mostwidely grown, with two major subspecies and over 40,000varieties.[5] Also notable are varieties of African rice(Oryza glaberrima) and wild rice (genus Zizania).
