Swertia chirata, also known as Indian gentian is a robust annual
herb which grows unto about 1.5 meters (3 feet) in height. It is an erect annual herb with
branching stem.Tinnevelly 'nilavembu' (S.chirata) is the best form of the herb. The
whole plant, collected in its flowering stage and dried, constitutes the drug. The trade
name S.chirata is based on the local name of the plant. It has long been used by the
Aurvedic physicians as a bitter tonic. Edwards et. al (1993)5 described chirata as an
annual and others as biennial or pluri-annual.
